Jairo Rios Rendon

San Antonio, TX - Former Haiti Men's National Team Head Coach, Jairo Rios Rendon, surprised the Trinity Men's Soccer team earlier this afternoon prior to training. Coach Rios was the head coach of the Haiti team that came to San Antonio last spring to play an exhibition match against the Tigers. It marked the first game for the Haitians since the devastating earthquake earlier this year. Fund-raising was carried out at the friendly, but spirited contest, played before 3,800 fans. Haiti beat the Tigers with two second-half goals, turning around a scoreless opening period.

Coach Rios had not prepared a speech but said he'd be honored to say a few words. After thanking the boys for their generosity for playing host to his former squad, Coach Rios spoke about what it takes to be a successful team. The boys listened attentively and were grateful for the advice. Coach Rios kept it short and simple but the message was clear. Play with pride and play with your heart. With these two things, all teams have the potential to be great.

What an honor it was to have Coach Rios stop by. We are forever indebted.

2010 Opening Game

Off and running!

San Antonio, TX - We are officially off and running! One game down, 19 left. Yesterday evening, in front of 1,000+ Tiger Supporters, the Trinity Men's Soccer team were victorious in their season opener by defeating the Schreiner Mountaineers 4-1. Leading the way were two new additions to the Trinity Soccer Family. Sophomore transfer Denny Mask (Tulsa, OK) recorded his first ever goal for the Tigers and First-year forward Brian Hines (Tempe, AZ) added a goal and an assist to cap off a wonderful night in front of goal. Senior Tommy Barros (San Antonio, TX) started the scoring in the 10th minute on an assist by junior Zack Garcia (Dallas, TX). Zack would eventually net the game winner in the 47th minute on an assist from junior, Cameron Hogsett (McKinney, TX), one of two assists on the night for Cameron. Grant Shopoff (junior, Memphis, TN) rounds out the point tally by assisting on Hines’ 65th minute goal. All in all, a huge team effort and the perfect way to kickoff the 2010 campaign.

3rd Annual Timothy Isom Memorial Dinner and Senior Soccer Banquet Recap

The greatest week in the history of the Trinity University Men’s Soccer program has finally come to an end.

Dating back to Saturday April 10th, roughly 350 gathered in Trinity University’s Mabee Dining Hall for the 3rd annual Timothy “Tito” Isom Memorial dinner and Senior Soccer Banquet. Among the attendees were current faculty and staff members, alums, current parents and parents of alums, current President Dr. Dennis Ahlburg, former President Dr. Ronald Calgaard, and most importantly Timothy Isom’s mother Edna, father Harold, sister Ralynn and her fiancé.

As the 350 mingled and conversed around a silent auction of donated gifts including over 30 autographed jerseys from the world’s greatest players and teams, the emotional evening began. A 6-minute tribute video, celebrating the life of Timothy “Tito” Isom ‘98, highlighted the evening. Both tears of remembrance and humility covered everyone’s face as we honored Trinity Soccer’s only #3. Following this tribute, Dr. Ahlburg made the announcement that the Timothy “Tito” Isom Memorial Media Center will begin construction down on the soccer field this summer, completed in time for the beginning of the fall 2010 season. Years and years of hard work by so many have finally paid off. Affectionately known as Tito’s Tower, it will be a stunning 14 foot tall red brick, green grass and steel structure. Play by play announcing, score keeping, stats analysis, video recording and live streaming of home games will be housed in this facility located at the Jesse H. Jones Soccer Field.

Following this portion of the evening, we began honoring our nine seniors, Andrew Chong, Tyler Czinege, Joey DeCosta, Ben Grossman, Eric Henderson, Conner Hickey, Patrick Johnson, Alan Llobet, and Chris Schardon. In 4 years of service to the Trinity Men’s Soccer Program, this senior class amassed an overall record of 77 wins, 5 losses and 4 ties, won four straight conference titles in unprecedented fashion by posting 38 wins, ZERO losses and 1 draw, made four trips to the NCAA tournament, appeared in two Elite Eights, one final four and were national runners-up in 2007. Chris Schardon became the 10th honoree of the Timothy Isom award, awarded annually to a graduating senior who puts team first, demonstrates dedication and a passion for life. We concluded this segment with our team awards. Eric Henderson, Sr. was honored as Most Improved Player, Alan Castillejos, Fr. as Most Promising First-Year, Alan Llobet, Sr. as Most Valuable Defender, Zack Garcia, So. as Most Valuable Midfielder, Ben Grossman, Sr. as Most Valuable Forward and Alan Llobet again, but this time as the Team MVP. The final award was given to professor of economics, Dr. Jorge Gonzalez for his dedication and service to the Soccer Program for the last 20 years. Dr. Gonzalez was given a plaque and a framed autographed jersey of his beloved Monterey Rayados.

April 10th concluded with a live auction as we said our good-byes and parted ways. Weekends and moments like this are what make this program special. We come from near and far but we will always have one common bond. We are Trinity Soccer.

SAN ANTONIO – Darren McAfee of Albuquerque, N.M., the Gatorade New Mexico Boys Soccer Player of the Year, will become a member of the Trinity University Tigers men’s soccer team in August.

McAfee, a midfielder at Albuquerque Academy, received the award from the Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE. The award honors athletic and academic excellence.

He is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year award, to be announced in May.

The 5-foot-11, 165-pound McAfee accounted for 29 goals and 23 assists last season, leading the Chargers to the Class 4A state semifinals. McAfee, the Class 4A Player of the Year, is a two-time First Team All-State honoree. As the leading scorer in Class 4A last season, McAfee concluded his high school career with 64 goals and 49 assists.

In addition to his many honors on the field, McAfee has maintained a high GPA in the classroom, and has been an active member in his community. He has volunteered locally on behalf of the Ronald McDonald House Charity and a food bank, in addition to donating his time as a youth camp counselor. A talented artist, McAfee qualified for a national Scholastic Art Award in pencil drawing.

"We are so excited to secure the services of Darren McAfee at Trinity for the next four years," said Coach McGinlay. "He is an outstanding student athlete who is both talented and versitile. I believe we have added a big impact player to our roster and I am thrilled that he chose Trinity University over some other outstanding options."

Trinity Soccer to Host Auction and Senior Banquet

Mark your calendars! On Saturday, April 10th, please join us on Trinity's campus for our annual Timothy "Tito" Isom Memorial Media Center Auction and 2009 Senior Soccer Banquet where we will honor the accomplished careers of 7 graduating seniors.

Let us introduce you to Timothy. Nicknamed “Tito” in high school by his soccer teammates, the name followed him to Trinity as he enjoyed tremendous success from 1994-1998. Born on February 22, 1976 to Edna and Harold Isom, he succumbed to an aneurysm on September 14, 2000 while working in Chicago, Illinois, at the very young age of 24. In his very few years, he touched the lives of everyone he met and was loved and respected by so many. In Tito’s memory, an annual award is given to a deserving soccer player that best exemplifies Tito’s contributions to Trinity soccer on and off the field of play.

On behalf or the Trinity University Soccer program, we enthusiastically invite you to help us build, brick by brick, a state-of-the art media center in loving memory of Tito.

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration in contributing to the construction of Tito’s Tower. Please contact us as we would be happy to answer any questions that you may have as you contemplate how you can help us achieve our goal to commemorate Tito.
